Recently, our advisor Jason noticed a discriminatory policy from a billion dollar company. In fact, it was one of the most extreme policies by any company in the world. Even a competitor, which had started off with a similar policy, changed their policy within a couple days.
But this company did not change its policies for over a week. So Jason wrote a heartfelt email and attempted to use words to try to get the company’s policies changed.
We cannot say how much impact Jason’s email had. But within 24 hours, the company changed its policy and Jason received a response from the CEO. At the very least, hopefully one small action helped make a difference.
Below, we’ve included a timeline of events, as well as translations of Jason’s email and the CEO’s response.
Whether you are a scientist, engineer, artist, athlete, entrepreneur, doctor... writing is an essential skill to help you communicate with others and accomplish your objectives. This is a reason why college essays are so important. Your college essays are the best way for admissions officers to evaluate and experience your writing style, technique, personality, and story. Your essays are one of the best chances for your overall application to "pop" and get distinguished from everyone else.
Another lesson is that even if success is not guaranteed, or seems like a long shot, we should still try. This is similar to what we ask of our students as well. Furthermore, sometimes it’s the most unexpected, smallest opportunity that can lead to large changes. Our team, and our students, are always keeping a lookout for opportunities large and small to make the world better.
While we are disappointed by the company's initial policy, we are grateful that they were ultimately able to do the right thing and for the CEO’s response.
Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the brave people around the world who are confronting COVID-19. We are inspired by the medical professionals in the front lines, some of whom are Elite Education families as well. We are also inspired by our students, many of whom continue to step up during challenging times however they can.
